This is a community toy library, run by our community for our community.
- There are three types of membership: rostered, full subscription or community services card (CSC).
- Rostered and CSC members work in the library on 3 sessions during the year. You help to check in returned toys, keep the shelves tidy and do various odd jobs to help us keep the library running. Rostered duties are a fantastic way to see all the toys on offer in the library, to meet other people in your community, and to get to see how the library works. One of the perks of working a duty is that you can set aside for your own loan any toy that takes your fancy as it comes in through the returns desk.
- A professional librarian works at each session and is in charge of opening and closing the library, organising the volunteers and handling all loans, payments, refunds and so forth.
- Once you’ve joined up you can come into the library whenever it is open and return and/or borrow toys.
- At any one time you can have up to three toys out – there is no restriction on the type or size of toys you can take.
- Toys are borrowed for up to two weeks at a time.
- Once you have done your volunteer duties, or if you are a “full subscription” member you can take four toys at time.
- There is no cost for the loan of any of the toys once you are a member, except over the summer holiday period when we are closed and hire out our larger toys to our members for a fixed price.
- You are responsible for returning the toys clean and dry, and for taking care of them when at your home.
- If you are late back with your toys you will be charged an overdue fine of $2 per toy, per week.
- If you lose a piece, or break a part of a toy you will be charged $5, or if the toy is no longer useable you will be charged a replacement fee relative to the age and condition of the toy. You can see why it is really important that you count and check your toy pieces against their bag label before you check them out of the library so that you don’t get charged for someone else’s mistake!
- If you find a missing piece that we have charged you for we will gladly give you back your $5. It costs us lots more than $5 in time to track down and buy a replacement part and we’d much rather keep our toys intact than take your money!
- If you lose or damage one of the “zippit” or “stashit” toy storage bags you will be asked to pay their replacement cost (minimum $10).
Maybe that sounds like a lot of rules. If a toy library fits with your lifestyle it can be incredible value for money and really easy to use. If it’s really hard for you to keep track of your toys, or to return them on time then maybe it’s not for you. We need the rules we have to try and keep our toys to a good standard for all our members to enjoy. Little kids can be tough on toys and they need help from an adult to learn how to look after them!
If you join our library we hope you will come to appreciate it for the gift it is. Many parents before you have contributed their time, enthusiasm and energy to making this a truly wonderful resource for all our children. Treat the toys as if you own them, help your children to appreciate them, take care of them and to understand that sharing our toys in this way is helping to make our community a better place and perhaps even to save our planet.
